The Sweden took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU
The trio of France, Czechia and Sweden are successively holding the Presidency started with France on 1 January 2022. By the end of Czechia’s term on 31 December 2022, Sweden has taken over the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the next six months as of 1 January 2023.
This is the third time that Sweden holds the EU Presidency as it last assumed the Presidency of the EU Council in 2009. At that time, a certain progress was recorded in Türkiye-EU relations and as a consequence, Chapter 27-Environment was opened to negotiations.
The motto of the Swedish Presidency is “greener, safer and more free Europe”. The Presidency has four main priorities: “security-unity”, “competitiveness”, “green and energy transitions”, “democratic values and the rule of law – EU’s foundation”.
