Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik Evaluated the Agenda on Habertürk

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik evaluated the agenda and replied to questions on the Habertürk programme in which he participated.

Regarding discussions on a privileged partnership between Türkiye and the EU, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik indicated that Türkiye would not accept a privileged partnership and said “If we see the words ‘privileged partnership’ on its cover, we will reject this without even opening the cover of the document. No one can offer a secondary status to Türkiye regarding its relations with the EU.”

-“The EU was not able to manage the refugee crisis”

Noting that European integration had been seriously undermined following Brexit, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik underlined that the refugee crisis had changed the political situation in Europe and that the EU was unable to manage the crisis successfully.”

- Chapters 23 and 24

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik pointed out the importance of the opening of Chapter 23 (Judiciary and Fundamental Rights) and Chapter 24 (Justice, Freedom and Security) said "Let us open Chapters 23 and 24, which are at the heart of the negotiation chapters.”

- "Germany is becoming more like Austria”

Regarding a question on the expression “There will not be any new chapters opened to negotiations nor will there be any negotiation chapters closed for Türkiye. The visa requirement will not be lifted and the Customs Union will not be extended” in the coalition discussions in Germany, Minister Ömer Çelik said:

 "We can say that 'Germany is becoming more like Austria'. Whereas Germany should have been encouraging Austria to adopt a new vision, Germany has itself moved towards being bereft of a vision with this expression.”

- "They have poisoned their public with opposition to Türkiye”

Indicating the some European politicians are not able to speak of the agenda without expressing opposition to Türkiye, Minister Ömer Çelik said “They have poisoned their public with opposition to Türkiye. They have harmed not only their public but also the relations to be established with Türkiye.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said that this policy of hostility to Türkiye, Islam and Erdoğan, as well as anti-Semitism, decreased the votes of the centre right and left and increased the votes of the far right.

Minister Ömer Çelik, who evaluated the course of Türkiye-EU relations this year, also said:

“I will make great efforts to establish a win-win situation and open new doors to pave the way for Türkiye’s full membership to the EU, in the framework of the mandate given to me by our President, Prime Minister, Government and the Ministry for EU Affairs. I say to our European counterparts: The wisest move in a part of the world that is increasingly less stable would be to integrate with Türkiye, in order to protect European integration and European interests and be a good model for the rest of the world.”
