The new Air Quality Directive has been adopted.

The Council of the European Union adopted the new Air Quality Directive on October 14, 2024, which establishes updated air quality standards across the EU as part of the European Green Deal.

In line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, with the new Directive, it is aimed to contribute to the goal of zero pollution by 2050, to strengthen air quality standards in order to prevent premature deaths caused by air pollution, and to allow EU citizens to claim compensation for damage to their health in cases where EU air quality rules are not respected.

The new Directive will enter into force 20 days after being published in the Official Journal of the European Union. After the Directive enters into force, EU Member States will have up to 24 months to incorporate its provisions into their national legislation and also, by 2030, the European Commission will review the air quality standards and every five years thereafter, in line with latest scientific evidence.
