EU Minister Ömer Çelik made statements on NTV’s live broadcast

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik appeared on NTV’s live broadcast. Minister Ömer Çelik made statements and answered questions on Türkiye-EU relations and latest developments.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik, who was reminded of his evaluation regarding the social media messages sent in the name of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, indicated that occasionally certain persons in the media or civil society organisations sent social media messages in the name of President Erdoğan and these persons aimed to “carry out operations to certain places”. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik underlined that utmost sensitivity was demonstrated on this matter and stated that “anything that was not in accordance with the institutional identity of the AK Party was not considered to be binding.”

-“The main opposition party is on the extreme right.”

Regarding the claims that the leader of the CHP Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu would be arrested, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said “Such a speculative matter as the arrest of the leader of the main opposition party does not merit any discussion. Placing this matter of speculation on the agenda is an attempt to negatively affect the agenda.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik, when reminded of the statement by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding the customs union, indicated that this was a matter that was desired by both sides. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik stated that the matter had been addressed with the framework of political concerns because of the European Parliament.

Minister of EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said that he found Merkel’s statement on the issue to be unfortunate, indicating that racists opposed the EU for being under the influence of Germany and their theses were strengthened when the EU was given instructions regarding a matter that was directly within its competence.

“All issues have been discussed in the Cyprus talks”

Regarding the statements that the comprehensive talks on Cyprus had ended, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik reminded that the process had been sabotaged by the Greek Cypriot side. Minister for EU Affairs said “Talks cannot be situated in uncertainty forever. All issues have been discussed”, and stated that Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus would seek to progress with the necessary consultations in the forthcoming period.
