Chapter 17 - Economic and Monetary Policy opened to negotiations in Türkiye’s EU accession process

Chapter 17 - Economic and Monetary Policy was opened to negotiations at the 11th meeting of the Intergovernmental Accession Conference held in Brussels on 14 December 2015. This brings the number of chapters opened to negotiations to 15, one of which is provisionally closed.

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkır, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu attended the Accession Conference on behalf of Türkiye. The Council of the European Union was represented by Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxemburg; and the European Commission was represented by Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy Enlargement Negotiations. Bert Koenders, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Netherlands, representing the coming Dutch Presidency of the EU was also present at the Accession Conference.

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkır stated that the opening of a new chapter has been a positive step in the direction of re-energizing Türkiye's EU accession process as agreed at the historic Türkiye-EU Summit of 29 November 2015. Minister Bozkır also emphasized that carrying forward the accession process is in the common interest of both sides.
