5 June - World Environment Day
June 5, 2023 is the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day. This platform has been organized annually since 1973 by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to raise awareness and encourage actions to protect the environment.
The theme of 2023 World Environment Day has been set as finding solutions to plastic pollution within the scope of the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.
Today, plastic pollution and its detrimental impacts on the environment, health and economy are undeniable. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Furthermore, microplastics are also a serious threat to our health and get into the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe.
This year's theme of World Environment Day has been set to increase people's awareness of plastic pollution in order to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural areas and our own health.
