PROJECT SUMMARY

Brief description of the project and main objectives
 

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the penitentiary system in Türkiye in line with EPRs and other international standards.

The project purpose is to create a professional, effective and efficient prison service through dissemination of model prison practices and promotion of prison reform in Türkiye by upgrading the prison services and contributing to the improvement of detention conditions.

• Rules and practices adopted and implemented regarding prison management and the treatment of prisoners according to European standards.
• Rehabilitation and training of prisoners ensured, complying with international human rights and prison standards; detention conditions improved.
• Two new Prison Staff Training Centres operational with the same level of professionalism as the other three training centres.
• The role of the Monitoring Boards and the enforcement judges enhanced.
• Prison reform promoted to the public and civil society.
• The capacity of the DGPDH of the MoJ for further design and implementation of prison reforms increased.
