PROJECT SUMMARY

Brief description of the project and main objectives

This project is designed for further strengthening the quality infrastructure in the field of market surveillance of chemical safety, food safety and nutrition, toys, water quality, drugs and cosmetics, environmental and public health.

This Project aims to increase the quality and effectiveness of the services provided by PHI (former RSHC) by establishing a calibration laboratory for mass, temperature and volume, and setting conditions for accreditation in accordance with quality standards TS EN ISO/IEC 17025-General Requirements for the Competence of Calibration and Testing Laboratories to reinforce capacities and capabilities of the existing “Electronic and Biomedical Equipment Maintenance and Repair Laboratory” to provide improved services for the equipment in use at PHI (former RSHC); c) to build capacities of the existing “Clean Room and Sterility Controls Laboratory to provide inspection services in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17020 standard and as well as applicable parts of ISO 14644, EN 12469, NSF/ANSI 49, EN 14175 and EN 1822 standards; o raise awareness of RSHC personnel on the concept of quality and improve working practices by training; e) To explore the feasibility, conditions and requirements for establishing a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with the view to improving traceability and the processing of data within PHI (former RSHC) laboratories.

Achievements / expected outputs

Technical capacity and capability of PHI (former RSHC) calibration laboratory staff is improved for providing mass, temperature and volume calibration services as well as fulfilling and maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation standard requirements;

The quality management system applied in the calibration laboratory is compliant with ISO 17025 standard requirements;

A business plan is elaborated to support a middle and long-term development strategy for the calibration laboratory;

Services offered by the calibration laboratory are known at PHI (former RSHC) headquarters and its regional centres. The visibility of the laboratory is enlarged externally.

Technical capacity and capability of PHI (former RSHC) Electronic and Biomedical Equipment Maintenance and Repair Laboratory staff is enhanced to provide adequate services.

Technical capacity and capability of PHI (former RSHC) Cleanroom and Sterility Controls Laboratory staff is enhanced for providing corresponding control and validation services as well as fulfilling and maintaining ISO 17020 accreditation standard requirements;

Cleanroom and Sterility Controls Laboratory quality management system is compliant with the requirements of ISO I 7020 standard;

Study on infrastructural requirements and complementary supplies necessary to provide additional control services in accordance with applicable parts of ISO 14644, EN 12469, NSF/ANSI 49, EN 14175 and EN 1822 standards

Awareness raising seminars on the concept of quality and working practices are delivered.

Feasibility of having an efficient Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) within PHI (former RSHC) is assessed. Scope of the LIMS is outline

Costs and benefits of implementing a LIMS are outlined.
