Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik evaluated the agenda at the TGNA Committee on Foreign Affairs

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik evaluated the agenda at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) Committee on Foreign Affairs. Regarding statements by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz calling for an end to EU accession negotiations with Türkiye, Minister Çelik said in his speech: “The opposing stance earlier taken by Austria has turned into a hostile one.”

Regarding Greece’s statements on the two Greek soldiers arrested in Türkiye and Türkiye’s actions in the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas, Minister Ömer Çelik said. “For us, the support lent by the EU to Greece regardless of its principles is damaging to the EU as a union of political principles.”

Minister for EU Affairs Çelik indicated that he had spoken with the First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and said: “Within this month, they will send a technical delegation to Türkiye and convey their opinions regarding the paper we have sent to them on visa liberalisation.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said that while the modernisation of the Customs Union had been first placed on the agenda by the EU, it later became a political rather than a technical matter. Minister Ömer Çelik stated that the negotiation chapters were the means to progress with the EU and noted that chapters on matters criticised by the EU needed to be opened to negotiations and worked on together.
