Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik evaluated the election results in Italy

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik made a statement over his twitter account emphasizing that the far right and opposition to the EU Project become stronger where a significant fight against hostility to Islam and migrants and racism is not carried out. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said “Introversion is not an option but suicide for the EU. Instead of reformism, opposition to the EU increases as the EU becomes more introverted. The most fundamental reform for the EU would be to centralise and accelerate integration with Türkiye.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik pointed out that none of the parties in Italy would come to power alone due to the election results and said “When the new government is formed, it will be 65th government in the past 72 years since the proclamation of the republic in 1946. That is nearly one government per year.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said that the anti-establishment Five Star movement and the far rightist Lega Party were the winners in the election. Minister Çelik said that the populist Five Star movement had increased its votes to more than 30% and had emerged as the first party in the elections.

“It is alarming that Euro-sceptic, anti-establishment and populist parties are on the rise in Italy as in rest of Europe. All of these far rightist parties, which are hostile to Islam and migrants, essentially oppose EU values. Not fighting against politics which are hostile to Islam, oppose migrants and spread discourses of hate serve to strengthen opposition to the EU. This is clear: where there is a racist political movement that is hostile to Islam and migrants, its real hidden agenda is hostility to democracy and opposition to the EU.”
