EU Minister Ömer Çelik met with the Members of the EU Harmonization Committee of the Grand National Assembly headed by Mehmet Kasım Gülpınar

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik met with Chairman of the European Union Harmonization Committee of the Grand National Assembly Mehmet Kasım Gülpınar and members of the EU Harmonization Committee at a working breakfast.

During the working breakfast held in Ankara,  Türkiye-EU relations, Türkiye’s EU accession process and latest developments were discussed in detail.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik made an overall evaluation to the press before the meeting and indicated that they would consult with the EU Harmonization Committee of the TGNA on the steps to be taken regarding Türkiye-EU relations in the forthcoming period and said that there would be dynamic process in Türkiye-EU relations next year.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik stated that the stability of the EU was very important for Türkiye and said that they followed closely discussions on the Brexit process and the Catalonian crisis.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik also noted that the process regarding the financial assistance for migrants was proceeding very slowly and said “Releasing some of the financial assistance to projects does not mean that these projects reach migrants in Türkiye. There is a high number of migrant children here. Half of these children are currently being educated. Stronger mechanisms need to be in place for the remaining children to be educated as well.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik also referred to work carried out by Türkiye for visa liberalisation with the EU and said. “We have finalised the work regarding the visa. This will be conveyed to the Commission soon. Türkiye has fulfilled all of its obligations. For us, the 72 requirements have been met.”

Minister Ömer Çelik said that there would be a summit between the EU and Türkiye on 26 March and indicated that how to proceed in the forthcoming period would be discussed at the summit.

Minister Ömer Çelik referred to Operation Olive Branch and said that Türkiye was carrying out a legitimate operation in Afrin. Minister Çelik also emphasized that Türkiye would definitely not take a step back in the fight against terrorism.
