Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik Evaluated the UN General Assembly Resolution on Jerusalem

Regarding the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the UN resolution criticising the decision of the US President Donald Trump on Jerusalem, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik said “This resolution is very welcome in the name of legitimacy. It is a turning point in history.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik reminded over his twitter account that the overwhelming majority of world’s nations rejected Trump’s decision concerning Jerusalem, which was a historic mistake.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said that the UN resolution was very welcome in the name of legitimacy and that it was a turning point in history.

Indicating that although the UN Resolution was nonbinding it would be very effective because it defined legitimacy clearly, Minister Ömer Çelik said:

“Legitimacy has prevailed over threats and blackmail. Rejection of Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has underlined Jerusalem’s historical status and also declared the legitimate status of Jerusalem.”

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik stated over his twitter account: “Türkiye’s rising voice for Jerusalem in the name of justice and legitimacy has echoed in world’s conscience and in a UN resolution. Today is a very fortunate and happy day for Palestine and Jerusalem. Today is a day of victory for all those in the world defending legitimacy….”

The draft resolution that criticised the decision of the US President Trump on Jerusalem has been adopted by the UN General Assembly despite US threats with 128 votes in favour and 9 in opposition.  35 countries abstained from the vote.
