Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik visited Adana on the occasion of the Democracy and National Unity Day

Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Ömer Çelik  held various contacts within the scope of activities held for 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day in Adana.

Minister of EU Affairs Ömer Çelik first visited the Yüreğir Municipality as a part of his Adana visit and obtained information from the authorities. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik then led the opening ceremony of the “15 July Martyrs’ Park Science, History and Culture complex building and the Memorial for the Martyrs” constructed by the Yüreğir Municipality. Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik made a speech at the opening ceremony of the Memorial  and said that whereas until now the coup attempts in Türkiye were carried out as an illegitimate transfer of power, to call the events of the night of 15 July as simply a “coup attempt” would be insufficient.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik said the following:

“Essentially, this terrorist organisation initiated an attempt to invade Türkiye. The picture that emerges is not just that of a transfer of power. It was a project to transfer the sovereignty of the Turkish Republic from the Turkish nation to other powers.”
Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik emphasized that the resistance on 15 July was not just to resist the coup attempt and prevent a massacre and said: “The 15 July coup attempt is one of the greatest threats that we have faced. The invasion was prevented in Çanakkale during our War of National Liberation with great sacrifice and the same sacrifice was demonstrated on 15 July.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik pointed out that the families of the martyrs were also there at the ceremony, and said that being the family of a martyr was one of the highest honours that there could be.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik emphasized that there should be monuments to remind the sacrifice made by the martyrs to future generations, and to children and youth and that this should not remain only in books or days of commemoration.

Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik also referred to the “diorama” in the park that was on the liberation of Adana on 5 January, also said: “just as our citizens remember the liberation of Adana on 5 January and the War of National Liberation, they will also remember the resistance and sacrifice put forth on 15 July.

Minister of EU Affairs Ömer Çelik signed the visitors’ book and wrote: I congratulate those who have realised this striking monument which will remind the future generations of the national spirit and resistance in Adana from 5 January to 15 July.”

Minister of EU Affairs Ömer Çelik and his colleagues also visited the 15 July photograph exhibit in the main entrance of the complex building.

Following the opening ceremony of the  “15 July Martyrs’ Park Science, History and Culture complex building and the Memorial for the Martyrs”, Minister for EU Affairs Ömer Çelik attended the 15 July Martyrs Mevlid Dinner organised in the scope of the Meeting of Martyrs’ Families and Veterans.
